SHORT HISTORY OF B&I PROJECTS

swaziland Broadcasting & Information Service

2004

Swaziland Broadcast and Information Services was the first broadcaster in Africa who decided to utilize the Lawo Zirkon range of digital broadcast mixers.  They subsequently in 2004 awarded B&I the contract for upgrading their radio broadcast facility in Mbabane. The initial phase comprised of one on air and one production fully fledged studios designed around the Lawo Zirkon broadcast mixer and the Axel Technology’s DJ Pro radio automation system software, with the systematic implementation of 7 more studios. This project was rolled out over a period of five years.
B&I were involved in the upgrading of the TV network for the Swaziland Television Authority. This included the replacing of old transmitters with those of DB Elettronica Telecommunicazioni (DB). B&I was also responsible for the supply, installation and commission of the previous transmission network equipment.

Eswatini Broadcasting & Information Service

EBIS new installations
2010

Complete refurbishment of radio studios and main control in Eswatini, including eleven studios and various edit suites. This included the supply and installation of an STL programme-contribution-network which utilized 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 11GHz links.
Another project for EBIS was the complete replacement of the Television transmission networks for Eswatini. This project included the supply and installation of various microwave links, and FM & Television transmitters and antennas.

Supersport

2009

Since as early as 2009 B&I was involved with similar projects with Supersport where we looked at permanent rig broadcast cabling to Stadiums to save on wear and tear of daily use as well as the time it took to put  temporary cables into a stadium per event. Different case studies were conducted where a combination of HD, SD, Audio and CAT 5 as well as some fibre cables were proposed. This project was halted during the 2010 World Cup due to the possibility of cables being damaged by overseas users.
After the World Cup, SuperSport sent a team of Engineers to Europe to evaluate the prospects of permanent wiring of main stadiums. It was clear to them that the best and most cost effective way was to use only fibre cable and it was therefore neccessary to convert all signals to fibre by means of fibre adaptors.
B&I was continiously part of these evaluations and all types of fibre connectors were tested for durability and dust tolerance. Different permutations of fibre redundancy were conducted where we found that the max fibre connections are limited to provide super slo-mo camera signals through fibre but it proved that HD signals were not affected and worked seamlessly.  B&I designed the lockable, water proofed boxes for the fibre cables to ensure the safety of the cables and easy access during sport events.
At this point B&I were awarded a contract to permanently install fibre cables at Coca-Cola Park (Ellis Park) in January 2012. During February the stadium held its share of Super Rugby games working through the new fibre system with no problems. The response was very favourable by camera men, especially to the rig and the de-rig time frames. This meant the OB vehicle could leave the stadium in under one hour after a major event.
Through this success B&I was awarded the contract to do SuperSport Park in Centurion as well as Loftus Versveldt in Pretoria and the Wanderers Cricket Stadium in Johannesburg. All these stadiums had up to now been used without any problems or faults for the Curry Cup season and more recently the CLT 20/20 cricket championship. In 2013 the SABC came on board and by winning a tender, B&I was asked to install permanent fibre cables and power cables in FNB(Soccer City) and Orlando Stadium in Soweto .
Next year in 2014 SuperSport will budget for more major stadiums to be installed with permanent fibre cable and B&I will deliver the same professional service as with the last six stadiums.
The same team from B&I that installed the last six stadiums will be used for this tender and it also includes the power cables installation and the fibre splicing.

South African Broadcasting Corporation (sabc)

main control upgrades
2015

Replacement of all the main controls for the SABC in ten cities, including Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Polokwane and Bloemfontein.  An extension to this project included the total replacement of the TV routing system at the SABC Television centre in Johannesburg.

National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa

Nemisa upgrades
2024

Upgrading of studios at NEMISA Media Training College.  These were relocated in 2024 from Parktown North to Auckland Park.

B&I supplied eleven DB4004 units to Sentech for monitoring remote FM transmitter sites and have found that they are best suited due to the features it offer and the price is very competitive in todays broadcasting environment.

B&I are proud to announce that we have been awarded a three year contract by Sentech for the supply of Sielco’s high quality analogue radio studio to transmitter links.  In today’s modern technology, Sielco is setting the standard for radio STL equipment.

2023 – 2024
  1. 377 studio to transmitter links (STL) in the 830MHz and 2,1GHz band and 357 parabolic dish antennas supplied to Sentech in 2023.
  2. Supply of 250 audio distribution amplifiers in 10 frames supplied to Sentech in 2024. 

SADC Upgrades

Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia.
2012 – 2018
  1. Upgrade of medium wave transmitter stations including masts in Botswana. Another project was the installation of ANT Telemetry equipment at all transmitter sites in Botswana.
  2. Supply and installation of a containerized 10kWatt Short Wave station in the DRC.
  3. Co-operation with a large consultancy company in the supply & installation of the Television satellite distribution network in Malawi which included 26 TVRO stations and 4 KU-band uplinks.
  4. Supply and installation of all radio studios and edit suites as well as the entire transmitter network of a private radio station in Zambia.
  5. Supply and installation of medium wave transmitter equipment in neighbouring countries of Lesotho, Mozambique and Namibia.
  6. Supply and installation of various microwave links, and FM &Television transmitters and antennas in neighbouring countries.

Supersport

training facilities
May – June 2013

B&I Engineering was commissioned to a design the layout & integration of equipment removed from the recently decommissioned M-NET OB-4 into a complete new studio and training facility. The aim of this project was to enhance the skill levels of new operators & technicians.
The project took 5 weeks to complete and consists of a Production Room, Audio Room, EVS Room, and Engineering & Vision Control Room. This 4-camera studio has three different wall boxes allowing the rooms to connect & conduct real-time scenarios as practice for typical live productions.

SABC polokwane

2009

The SABC has once more decided on audio mixing consoles by LAWO during a recent tender. Thus far 7 new studios have been built by B&I Engineering. The 6 new edit suites, using LAWO SAFFIRE consoles have been completed and are in full operation.
As the project continous, three more current affairs studios will be completed in 2013. All Lawo Saffire audio mixing consoles are connected via fibre optic to the new 1024 x 1024 LAWO MADI routing switcher to accomodate all fibres and interface with the excisting Madi router installed by B & I Engineering in 2009.

Lesotho

complete counrty-wide broadcast solution
2015

Supply, installation and upgrade of FM network in Lesotho which included 77 FM transmitters, 12 multi-channel combiners, antenna systems at 8 sites, 16 microwave Links, multiple 4×4 vehicles and operation control centres.
This project also included the supply and installation of ANT Telemetry and remote control equipment at all transmitter sites in Lesotho alongside the 182 sites for Sentech in South Africa.

Various Projects Over The years

Construction and installation of many community radio stations built all over South Africa for the Department of Communications (DoC) and the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA). Each radio station consists of an on-air studio, production studio, outside broadcast equipment and two sound proofed and air conditioned rooms.  In some cases we also supplied and installed transmitter stations.
